Where are you from?
I grew up in Chanhassen, a suburb of Minneapolis. My world revolved around basketball – and I only now have come to appreciate how rare an opportunity a “perfect Saturday” likely was for my parents, as a result. I’ve acquired a few new “skills” – skiing and skating – as an adult, to be able to give my sons a chance to embrace some of the unique opportunities in Minnesota that I dribbled past in my youth.

Perfect Saturday?
When you are from Minnesota, you learn to treasure the summer and fall months. Much of the morning would be spent with family attending activities for my two young boys, who are learning to fall in love with sports…or at least the treats that tend to follow a game! Cap off the day with an afternoon / evening on the lake with my wife and our friends.

Early jobs and what did you learn?
I was a basketball camp coach and a server at a restaurant. I realized that you can learn something from everyone and that your impact and effectiveness are often measured by your ability to empathize with your “customers”. As a coach, it is the ultimate reward to see and celebrate a players’ improvement, and as a server, it was all about problem solving while working as a team; my only regret is that I didn’t learn how to cook!

What word best defines you?
Dedicated

What life event best defines you?
I graduated college without a job – an offer I accepted 9 months prior was rescinded due to the Great Recession. I learned to never take anything for granted and that there are always going to be things outside of your control. The takeaway was that resiliency is critical in business, because success is rarely a straight line. Life has setbacks, businesses have setbacks – how you prepare and how you respond will determine whether those setbacks become opportunities. While I never would have admitted this at the time, I am better for having gone through it.

What experience or thoughts translate best to family/founder businesses?
When my mom started her own audiology business after her predecessor employer merged with another firm, she was not pursuing an executive title nor was she too proud to wear multiple hats. Founders have both passion and purpose, but their support for their business knows no limits. This is why they often have followership internally and long-term relationships externally. We bring a similar ownership mindset at CPC – our role is to amplify what makes each business great – and as partners and builders, how we contribute may fall outside our “job description”.
