Founders and family businesses face distinct challenges and opportunities when it comes to transitioning their business — from cementing their legacy to supporting the local community and creating effective employee programs.

The Carlson family

Doing well by doing good was part of the Carlson credo long before it became a business trend. These values go back to our entrepreneurial roots in the 1930s. What started as a one-man operation developed into a corporate platform supporting the community by growing good jobs and investing back into the community to keep it thriving. With decades of growth and diversification, Carlson eventually became the second-largest private employer in the US. Learn more about the Carlson family.

Strong business performance has remained an essential goal. But it’s not the only way we gauge success. With four generations of involvement in our family’s business, we have proven that corporate values don’t have to be a cliché. We believe that real achievement is a product of hard work and ingenuity, not short-term gains or financial engineering.

The Carlson Family Foundation

We are deeply proud of our business heritage and the Carlson foundation’s impact on humanitarian and community affairs, including education and mentoring for children and youth at risk. We welcome opportunities to help other family businesses hone their strategic philanthropy and expand their own impact.
